Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH), who President Trump announced as his Vice President Running Mate, accepted the nomination on the third night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The 39-year-old Senator from Middleton, Ohio, spoke about his Mother’s struggle with drug addiction and being raised by his tough and loving Grandmother. He spoke about his life story and what led him to write his bestselling 2016 memoir entitled Hillbilly Elegy, that later became a motion picture starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams.

Senator Vance, who is of Scottish-Irish descent, was born on August 2, 1984, with the given name of James Donald Bowman to Beverly Carol Vance and Donald Ray Bowman. Due to his Mother’s addiction issues, he and his sister were primarily raised by his maternal grandparents, James and Bonnie Vance, lovingly known as “MaMaw” and “PawPaw”, and eventually changing his name to Vance, in honor of his grandparents.

After graduating from Middletown High School in 2003, JD enlisted in the US Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq as a combat correspondent, later being assigned to the Public Affairs section of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. After his service to his Country, he then attended Ohio State University under the GI Bill and in 2009 graduated summa cum laude with a BA Degree in political science. After graduating with distinction from Ohio State University, JD attended Yale Law School where he was the editor of the Yale Law Journal and graduated in 2013 with a Juris Doctor degree. After being encouraged by one of his professors, he wrote his memoir Hillbilly Elegy.

JD met his wife, Usha Chilukuri, while both were graduate students at Yale Law School and married in 2014, and now have three beautiful children. In 2022, JD Vance was elected to Congress and became a United States Senator for the State of Ohio, defeating then-democratic nominee Tim Ryan. Originally, JD was opposed to Donald Trump’s 2016 run for President, but like most people, he was misled by his perceptions of who the media would have you believe President Trump actually is. Once he got to know the man and his love for America, he became a strong Trump supporter. On July 15, 2024, President Trump nominated Senator Vance as his running mate, making him the very first Marine Veteran to ever be nominated for Vice President.
